SUBEMERGENCE

Blue Dot Gallery, Toronto, 2012
Presented in Toronto’s fashionable Distillery District in 2012, Subemergence brought greater clarity and luminosity to Cavilla’s expanding visual language. Human, animal, and aquatic forms rose from densely worked fields of colour, but with a stronger sense of compositional purpose and lyrical poetry than in his earlier exhibitions. Mothers, children, masks, and fish recurred as presences, carrying the works beyond personal psychology towards broader archetypal ideas of memory, vulnerability, and transformation. A richer, more luminous palette intensified this shift. Abstraction no longer functioned merely as the environment surrounding the figure; it became the generative field from which the imagery took form. This exhibition demonstrated Cavilla’s increasing ability to guide his intuitive process without diminishing the mystery of the explored themes.
