In Screaming Obstacle, Cavilla sets a jagged, blue-green form against a tall, dark presence, the two divided by a narrow passage of pale yellow. Angular contours and heavily worked surfaces give the composition a sense of pressure and arrested movement. Ochre and rust tones anchor the lower half, while the ambiguous forms hover between bodies, landscape and abstraction, lending the painting an uneasy physical tension.
