In Greta, Cavilla gives a compact portrait an unmistakable presence. A sweep of brilliant yellow hair surrounds an elongated face, its uneven features and multiple gazes suggesting a distinctly unimpressed appraisal. Folded arms reinforce her reserve, while thick, broken passages of paint bring energy to the dark green background and pale clothing. The tension between her guarded pose and the exuberant surface gives the painting its wry humour.
