In Thinking Man, Cavilla stretches an orange-red face upward into broad, flame-like passages of colour, while a large golden hand supports the cheek. Deep greens anchor the figure and recur in the loosely divided background, intensifying the warmth of the face. The small eyes and slightly parted mouth give the familiar pose of contemplation an uneasy alertness, suggesting a mind caught in imaginary possibilities.
