En Infant with Fish, Cavilla brings three figures into a close, suspended arrangement against a deep blue-green ground. Warm ochres and oranges connect the infant to the maternal figures curving around him. A red-haired woman holds a baby’s soother, and a small striped fish balances the composition reflecting the child-man’s hopes and desires. Rounded bodies, watchful faces, and richly textured paint give this imagined encounter a sense of intimacy, with no firm ground to interrupt its dreamlike stillness.
